Dennis Peterson, Superintendent 952-401-5004
Minnetonka Schools serve the western third of Minnetonka and all or parts of Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Victoria and Woodland. There are more than 7,600 students enrolled in Minnetonka schools.
In total there are six elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (Gr. 6-8), one high school (Gr. 9-12), and a community education center that houses many of the district’s early childhood, youth and adult programs.
Four of Minnetonka’s elementary schools have been named Blue Ribbon Schools or Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education and the Minnesota Elementary Principals Association. Most elementary schools are organized in traditional grade levels. Some offer families a choice of multi-age classrooms or looping, where the teacher moves with the class from one grade to the next.
Minnetonka Public Schools offers a variety of learning opportunities for families, including Chinese or Spanish Immersion as an option at each of its six elementary schools beginning in kindergarten and first grade. In the Immersion program, English-speaking students learn a second language as part of regular classroom activities.
The middle school program is tailored to meet the needs of adolescents, focusing on development of strong academic skills and building confidence and self-esteem. Key components include: students spending a majority of the day with the same team of teachers, a daily advisory program, and opportunities for students to explore their developing interests. Accelerated courses in math and science — as well as world language courses in Chinese, French, German and Spanish — are offered to middle school students.
Minnetonka High School offers accelerated courses, including pre-engineering and architectural design, as well as 18 Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Minnetonka also offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. In addition to traditional world language options, students may enroll in Chinese, Japanese and American Sign Language.
Minnetonka students consistently perform among the top on state tests. It was one of only three districts statewide to have all of its secondary schools — middle and high schools — named Minnesota 5-Star Schools in 2004.
